The C.A.F.E. is proud to introduce our new DC Connect Invitational Teaching Course!

What is Invitational Teaching?

William Purkey (1996) developed the  Invitational Education theory. The idea behind the theory is that learning occurs when learners are positively encouraged or ‘invited’ into the educational experience.

What does this course offer?

This online DC Connect course can help you create a more inviting and positive learning environment for you and your students. The course is filled with various learning activities designed to encourage discussion and reflection on your professional teaching practice.

There are four modules within the course. Completing the required activities within a given module will earn you that module's badge. Obtaining all four badges will earn you the Invitational Teaching Certificate which you can print and display proudly in your office or add to your teaching portfolio.

The course is comprised of four modules that can be completed at your leisure.  The course is offered without any defined cohort and is completely asynchronous in nature.  The course covers the following four topics (modules):

  • Biases, Power and Language
  • Universal Design for Learning
  • Group Work
  • Classroom Management

All four modules were developed together in order to provide you with a proactive and holistic approach to teaching and learning. The ultimate goal is to help you create an inclusive learning environment; therefore, diminishing student and classroom management issues.

If you would like to be enrolled in the Invitational Teaching Course or just have some questions regarding all that is involved in the course please email any one of the following C.A.F.E. members:

The C.A.F.E. is looking to form a community of practice with invitational teaching as the focus.  If this is a community you would like to be involved with please contact the C.A.F.E. at cafe@durhamcollege.ca to request more information.
